"Patent Medicines: Advertisement for pain killer for cholera"
Patent medicines -- often some combination of alcohol and other useless or unsavory ingredients -- were advertised in newspapers and periodicals for the treatment of various ailments, including cholera. This curative, advertised in 1886, three years after the cholera vibrio virus was discovered, was typical of such remedies.
