Fortifying Against the Cholera

Nativist Americans believed that cholera was a scourge visited most heartily on poor immigrants because of their "lewd" and "intemperate" lifestyles. Such judgment seems ironic against this image of respectable Londoners treating their cholera symptoms with a large bottle of brandy. | |
