494 Breathing a Vein (Bleeding)
Breathing a Vein (Bleeding)
"Bleeding, " or bloodletting, was used prior to the mid-nineteenth century to release disease and ease the suffering of ill patients. Cholera victims were often subjected to such treatment, which likely led to the demise of many medical practitioners of the bleeding "cure" as well. The USNLM describes this image in the following way: "A man sitting on a stool is being bled by another man standing next to him and holding his arm in one hand and, in the other, a bowl into which the blood spurts."
