Archbishop John Joseph Hughes was ordained in 1826 and appointed to the New York Diocese in 1838. During his early tenure, he tried to foster Catholic unity in a time of strong ethnic loyalties. Deeply concerned about anti-Catholicism and the effect of the Protestant Public School Society, he futilely attempted to get the state to give Catholics a portion of the tax revenue. In 1842, he was appointed bishop and in 1850, Archbishop. He was instrumental in the founding of Fordham University and the building of St. Patrick's Cathedral. He toured Europe in 1861-62 as Abraham Lincoln's unofficial emissary in order to gather support for the Union. His last public appearance was his address, made at the request of Governor Seymour, to the rioters on July 17, 1863. |
